Mistress Fishing Report: 23 June 2012

After 3 weeks of a full overhaul with regular maintenance and the addition of some new updated equipment Mistress was back out in the big blue ocean off the Gold Coast today.  After a crisp & cool morning with 15 knots of south westerly breezes Skipper Captain Brett Alty found bait and warm water in around 300 meters and pulled the hooks on a yellowfin at the boat, 15 minutes later hooking a nice 200 pound Striped Marlin!  The Stripey was successfully tagged and released on a Larva Lure (NightSky). The wind died off during the afternoon to around 5 knots making a nice day on the water.  The weather is looking good to get Mistress out again soon, possibly tomorrow or early on next week.

Mistress Fishing Report: 22 May 2012

Mistress headed out at 5am from Sovereign Island, after a nice trip out as the weather was amazing the lines were put in the water at 6:45am and as the last lure went in and was hooked up after a short fight tagged a nice blue marlin of around 160kg, set the lures again and we hooked up again after about 10mins we dropped the fish about 80m from the boat, with the lures set again we were on again and the time was only 7:40am, after 18mins we tagged a nice blue marlin of around 170-180kg, without a break the lures went back in 5mins after being set we hooked up this was a much better fish after a 25mins fight a nice 270kg blue came along side. It was now 8:55am or there about and we where 4-4-3 this result stayed the same until around 12:30pm we managed to raise a lot of fish in the down time with a few fish having a swat or just coming up for a look and at 12:30pm pandemonium, Captain Brett Alty marked fish up high as he turned the boat a fish came up on the teaser as he pulled the teaser in a blue followed it all the way to the boat, then the short rigger, short corner, long corner all went off at the same time with another fish still on the teaser, all the fish took to the air at the same time which made for amazing viewing and not knowing which one to grab first, they all crossed over one another and all dropped the lures at the same time trolled around 50m after that and the short and long rigger went off again but we called it the same fish maybe not don’t know how many where in the spread, missed them all but wow. The end result was raised 11+ and went 7-4-3 blue marlin all tagged and released on Larva Lures which certainly helped achieve this result.

Mistress March/April Marlin Report

14 year old Kyle Fletcher on his First Marlin in the Chair

The good fishing off the Gold Coast continued through March and April. We have been averaging one Blue Marlin per day, with the majority being around the 300lb mark. Our best fish, which we tagged was a beauty that we estimated as being in the order of 800lb.

There were two highlights during the period.  Firstly the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries, who run Australia`s Gamefish Tagging program released the results for the 2010/2011 Season.

As is normally the case “Mistress” tagged more Blue Marlin than any other boat in Australian waters. We actually tagged more than 3 times as many as the second placed boat!!!

Our other big event was tagging a Striped Marlin for 14 year old Kyle Fletcher on the first occasion he had had the opportunity to fish Heavy Tackle using a Chair. Young Kyle has ridden along with us a few times during Tournaments.  He is a mad keen Fisherman and good to have on a boat as he helps clear gear, and takes the hand held video for us.  As a reward for his effort and enthusiasm we decided to give Kyle a day as Angler.  He didn`t let us down doing a really good job in the chair on a Striped around 170lb. The fish would have beaten the current Queensland Junior Record, but to his credit Kyle elected to Tag it. However, we did make a movie of him in action so he does have a permanent record of his achievement.

Also first time angler Vlad Puljich fishing on his 40th birthday caught and released a blue marlin of 450lb.  Congratulations Vlad on your first Marlin Tagged & Released and Happy Birthday.

The other news is that we now have a pair of Video recording Sunglasses on the boat.  Just amazing how good the video from these small cameras is these days.

We still have good time left during this year’s Cairns season, and if it`s as good as last year it will be a blinder.
